Invasive alien species are one of the primary causes of global biodiversity decline and in Ireland the freshwater environment is particularly vulnerable. In this lecture we will discuss the traits and characteristics of the alien species that are successfully invading our wetlands and aquatic habitats. We will try to understand what has allowed our waterbodies to become so vulnerable to invasion, how we can mount our defences and successfully fend off an ecological invasion, and how we can ensure future resilience of our aquatic habitats to invasion.
At the National Botanic Gardens we are holding Biodiversity Month throughout May to celebrate the wonders of Irish biodiversity. As always National Biodiversity Week will be running from 19th to 28th May 2023.
