Artefact Description Spalted beech container. Beech is not a native Irish tree species, but is naturalized. It is most commonly known for its timber which is used to make furniture and crafts. The fresh leaves and nuts can be eaten, both raw and cooked. Spalted means that the wood has an irregular black coloration caused by fungal decay. It is most commonly found in dead trees and sought after by woodworkers for its unique finish.
