Artefact Description Snuff tobacco. Snuff is ground tobacco that is sniffed or inhaled through the nose. It can come scented and of varying texture and moistness. It was traditionally carried in little decorative boxes. Despite the absence of tar, chemicals and smoke snuff is still known to have harmful effects on ones health. It originated in Northern America but by the eighteenth century was popular among aristocratic men and women of Europe.
