Materials - Essential Oils
The distinctive fragrance of the 'volatile oil' present in aromatic plants has been utilized by people throughout the world from antiquity right up to the present day. Essential oil is extracted from various parts of the plant - the flowers, roots, seeds, leaves and bark primarily through distillation or resin such as frankincense and myrrh burned for their fragrant smoke. Its application has changed very little over the years - for personal adornment, religious incenses for purification and meditation, medicine, food flavouring, mood enhancers and modifiers. Today the essential oil industry is booming and its application for medicinal purposes enhanced once more through the discipline of aromatherapy.
