THE COLLECTIONS

At one time the National Herbarium was housed in the National Museum in Dublin City. In the summer of 1970, Maura Scannell and Donal Synnott transferred the entire collection to the National Botanic Gardens. The systematic, consolidated herbarium is broken down into a number of sub-sets, usually Irish specimens and then the rest of the world, but in some cases a British herbarium is also held separately. The number of specimens, very approximately, is as follows:

World British Irish Total
Phanerogams 191,550 41,250 63,000 295,800
Charophytes 1,500 1,500
Bryophytes 10,500 16,500 27,000
Hepatics 3,000 7,500 10,500
Lichens 11,850 19,500 31,350
Algae 7,500 4,500 12,000
Fungi 31,500 7,500 39,000
Myxomycetes 3,000 3,000

The British Herbarium is of note in that it contains a large number of 19th Century specimens, and has been much overlooked by British botanists [see Rich, T. C. G., Jones, R. A. & Jebb, M. Three new British sites for Carex depauperata With. (Cyperaceae) represented in the Irish National Herbarium, Glasnevin, Watsonia Vol 23, pages 340–341].

The World Herbarium contains both wild and cultivated plants. Unincorporated material comprises almost 25% of the collection, and in addition a large quantity of University College Dublin material has been placed in the herbarium at the end of each family, but is not yet incorporated into the generic sequence. Furthermore, much of this material remains unmounted.

UNINCORPORATED COLLECTIONS

A number of separate herbaria, where they are of historical significance, are maintained separately from the systematic collection.. In addition the Herbarium holds many exsiccate which have never been disassembled. These include

  • Anzi; Lichenes rariores Veneti; Lichenes rariores Langubardi; Lichenes minus rari Italiae Superioris; Cladoniae Cisalpinae.; Lich. Etruriae rar.
  • Cleve & Moller; Diatoms
  • Collins, Holden & Setchell; Phyc. Bor.-Am.
  • Hepp; Die Flechten Europas Herausgegeben,
  • Koerber; Lichen. Germ.
  • Larbalestier; Lichen Herb.; Lichenes Caesariensis et Sargiensis (1867) - British Channel Islands.
  • Massalongo; Lichenes Italiae Exsicc.
  • Mudd; British Cladoniae, Herbarium Lichenum Britannicorum.
  • Rabenhorst; Lichenes Europaei
  • Schaerer; Lichenes Helvet. Exsiccati
  • Tuckermann; Lichenes Americanum Septent.
The Leiden Volume is one of the oldest collections in the herbarium. This is a volume of c. 700 plant specimens collected in the University Gardens at Leiden by Mr Gayman, a pharmacist, probably around 1661.

The Augustine Henry collection is of particular importance, representing the raw material upon which much of Henry & Elwes' classic Trees of Great Britain and Ireland was based. It comprises ca. 9,000 specimens, and has been catalogued.

The Admiral Jones collection of Lichens comprises a substantial collection of Lichens put together by Theobald Jones in the 1850s and 1860s. These were catalogued by the National Museum, and are still retained in their Mahogany cabinets. They cannot be incorporated into a modern sequence without destroying their historical context.

The Foreign Ferns comprise two collections, the Baker collection, which comprises 70 volumes of Ferns and fern allies (ca. 2,000-3,000 specimens) chiefly from India, West Indies and New Zealand. Many of the specimens determined by Mr. J. G. Baker, F.R.S. The collection was exhibited at the Colonial Exhibition in London in 1886 and came into possession of the National Museum in 1890.

A second collection is that of Henry Corbyn Levinge, who collected in Sikkim, Kashmir, and the Nilgiris hills. This collection is of a comparable size to that of Baker's.

The McNab Herbarium was purchased by the National Museum in 1890. It includes over 1,300 specimens made by William McNab (1780-1848), who was a foreman at the Royal Gardens, Kew (1801-1810), under the then curator William Townsend Aiton. Many of these specimens are from plants grown for the first time at Kew, and from which the species were described by Aiton (Hortus Kewensis, 1810). The collection includes material collected by:

William Kerr - plants from China and from The Philippines.
Francis Masson - Cape of Good Hope and eastern North America.
Archibald Menzies - South America.
Peter Good (Flinders Expedition) - Australia.
After Kew, William McNab took up an appointment at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh (1810-1848). The Herbarium contains a further 1,800 or so specimens from this period. The herbarium became the property of William Ramsay McNab, William's grandson, who brought it to Dublin sometime after 1872, when he was appointed Professor of Botany in the Royal College of Science.

UNINCORPORATED MATERIAL

Over its 100 year history the herbarium has always been understaffed, the 600,000 specimens of fungi and plants being curated by one, or at most two, personnel, for much of that time. In consequence many bundles and parcels have yet to be fully accessed, and presently over 1,000 pigeonholes filled with material has still to be fully identified and incorporated. This meta index provides an insight into the range of material available at DBN.
